Could you be unintentionally damaging your reputation? As a blogger, influencer, or small business, it’s important to focus on how you make people feel. This is what separates your BRAND from your REPUTATION.
In this post, I’m breaking down the difference between brand and reputation and listing out common mistakes influencers make that damage their reputation.
So let me break it down for you:
Brand: Your brand is a representation of your unique identity. It’s a combination of your name, your words, your logo, and any other element that you consistently use to represent who you are.
Reputation: Your reputation is how people perceive you based on how you make them feel. Building a positive reputation is a powerful tool and is key to developing an impactful influence.
As an influencer, it’s important that you think about your reputation just as much as you think about your brand. You may think that you have a great brand, but have you thought about how you make people feel every time you post a picture or video?
So now lets talk about the most common mistakes that bloggers and digital influencers make that could potentially ruin or damage your brand
Displaying Your Unrealistically Perfect Life
We all probably follow that one person who is all rainbows and butterflies 24/7. They have the perfect body, the perfect family, and the “perfect life”. But how does that make you feel? I’m going to guess that every time you look at their photos, you start to feel insecure and self-conscious about your own life. As an influencer, it is your responsibility to portray the “real” side of your life along with the “perfect”. If you’re always showing how perfect your life is, you’re building a reputation of not being authentic.
Never Responding To Your Followers
You’re never too big or too small to respond to comments, messages, and/or e-mails. While you may not have time to answer EVERYONE, you should never forget to set aside time to respond to people. Too many influencers forget that they need to engage with their tribe. If you’re never responding to your followers, you’re leaving them feeling ignored and neglected.
The Constant Sales Pitch
We’ve all seen it. The complete stranger who slides into your comments or DMs who is on a mission for you to buy their product or get you to follow them. This aggressive sales pitch approach never works, as it comes across as spammy and fake. It will make people feel uncomfortable.
Commenting On Posts With Meaningless Words
While its important to engage with other people on Instagram, don’t start mass producing the same comment on every photo you see. First, Instagram could potentially pick that up as spam and they may block you. Second, the people on the receiving end will eventually pick up on the fact that you are not being genuine. Once they realize you’re just commenting on their photo with selfish interests that they’ll return the favor, it makes them feel unimportant.
Making Everything About Yourself
You should never feel afraid to share fun facts and tidbits about who you are, but make sure that you’re not ONLY talking about yourself in every story and post. There’s a fine line between self-promotion and arrogance, and you have to make sure you don’t cross it. Once people start to feel like you’re self-absorbed, they’re going to feel annoyed and disengaged.
