How do you build a connection with your audience on Instagram? I’m probably not the first person to tell you that the number of followers you have is far less important than the connection you have with your audience. One of the most powerful tools you could ever have on the platform is an engaged and loyal audience. And if you’re focused on building authentic connections, those are the people who will become your tribe, your ambassadors, and your community.
Here are THREE tips for creating a more powerful connection with your audience on Instagram:
Don’t Just Tell Your Story, Invite Them In
Instead of just talking at your audience, talk with them. One of those most beautiful aspects of Instagram is that it gives you instant access to your followers at any moment. Instead of just sharing your story, ask them to participate in it with you. Ask them questions, respond to their comments, share their notes on Instagram stories. Show them through your actions that they are important to you. If you are consistent with this, you will build a very loyal tribe.
Focus On Value Over Vanity
You all know how I feel about Instagram stories but I will say it again: Instagram stories are critical to growing an audience that trusts you. And if you can show up from behind the camera every once in a while, you will start to attract a more loyal tribe of fans and followers. I’ve had a number of people tell me “I’m not confident in how I look” or “I feel so stupid when Im on camera”, but my response to that is to focus on the value you’re adding rather than what you look like. People don’t care whether or not you look like a million bucks, they follow you because they want to learn from you.
Stop Confusing People With Your Message
I cover this throughout my Free 5 Day Instagram Bootcamp, but a major mistake that people often times make is confusing their audience with chaotic messaging. We’re all tricked to believe that by producing MORE content with LOTS of topics, we’re going to make people happier. But as human beings, we all CRAVE simplicity. So if you can narrow your focus and wrap it into ONE mission statement, then people will gravitate towards you and your brand.
